I already paid a scammer or fake agent: what to do now

Stop paying, call your bank or wallet at once and ask them to stop the transfer, and save every receipt, chat and number. Report online fraud to the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) on 1799 or at complaint.nccia.gov.pk, and agent or visa fraud to the FIA. This is not your fault, and we cannot promise a particular outcome, but acting early gives you the best chance.

In the first hour

  1. Stop sending money, even if the person says a last payment will fix everything.
  2. Call your bank's helpline at once. Tell them it was fraud and ask them to stop or hold the transfer. If you used a wallet, call its helpline too.
  3. Do not delete anything. Take screenshots of chats, numbers, receipts, account details and the advert.
  4. Do not argue with the person, and do not send more documents or one-time codes.
  5. Tell a parent or someone you trust. You do not have to carry this alone.

Report it in Pakistan

Online fraud, fake messages or a hacked account: call the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) helpline on 1799, or file a complaint at complaint.nccia.gov.pk. The old FIA cyber crime wing was dissolved, and NCCIA took over those complaints.

Agent or visa fraud: the FIA handles cases such as human trafficking, immigration offences and hawala or hundi. Its helpline is ⁦051‑111‑345⁩-786, and it has an online complaint portal at complaint.fia.gov.pk. In September 2026 the FIA registered a case against a study consultancy under the Emigration Ordinance 1979.

Fraud calls or SMS: report the number to your mobile company first. If there is no response, PTA says you can report it for blocking on ⁦0800‑55055⁩ or at complaint.pta.gov.pk.

If you paid from a Pakistani bank or wallet

The State Bank of Pakistan says you should first complain to your bank. If you get no reply within 45 days, or find the reply unsatisfactory, you may file a complaint with the Banking Mohtasib. For fraud-related cases, the bank's final reply must be issued within 30 days.

The Banking Mohtasib's services are free of cost, and you can file online.

If you paid someone abroad, or a foreign university

Tell the university right away, in writing, if its name was used. Ask it to confirm what it has received.

United Kingdom: Report Fraud, run by the City of London Police, at reportfraud.police.uk or ⁦0300 123 2040⁩. It covers England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and Scotland reports through 101. It replaced Action Fraud on 4 December 2025.

United States: ReportFraud from the Federal Trade Commission at reportfraud.ftc.gov. For international scams, econsumer.gov brings together more than 65 consumer protection agencies.

Money loss can feel heavy. We cannot promise that. Calling your bank at once and reporting quickly gives you the best chance, and a report also helps stop others being caught.

Start with NCCIA for online fraud, and the FIA for agent or visa fraud. Also tell the university if its name was used.

  • In trouble abroad: the nearest Pakistani embassy, or the Foreign Office Crisis Management Unit, ⁦+92 51 9207887⁩ (a Foreign Office advisory of March 2026 described it as working 24 hours).
  • Human rights legal advice: Ministry of Human Rights 1099 (free, weekdays 8:30 am to 9 pm).
