5 checks before you pay or sell anything
For students applying to study abroad, and for their families. Free. Print this page.
- Ask the university yourself.
Type the university's website address yourself. Write to its admissions office at the email address published there. Only the university can confirm an offer.
- Check the official register.
Is the university on an official register? Use the free University tool in the Check tab. A listing shows only what the register says. It does not prove your offer.
- Check the email or link.
Lookalike addresses and free email accounts are warning signs. Type the website address yourself, not from a link someone sent.
- Check where the money goes.
Pay only through the payment page on the university's own website, to an account in the university's own name. Never to a person, a mobile wallet, crypto or gift cards.
- Stop and talk to someone you trust.
Secrecy and pressure are the two strongest warning signs. Before you sell land, gold or a house, confirm the admission and the exact fee with the university first.
